Meet Mark White ... 50 years old from Middlesex. What made him jack in a £50,000 a year secure job in the height of the recession and change career? Some might it’s a little mad ... but what would Mark say now?

Mark was a middle-manager in a telecoms company, getting up at six in the morning and having a long commute to a job he didn’t like.

Despite the fact he was making £50k a year he wasn’t happy and felt his prospects were limited. He no longer wanted to sit in an office all day so he decided to invest in his future career.

So what did Mark do? He decided to retrain as an electrician ... but how did that turn out for him?

“That was the best investment I could have made ... it was a brilliant decision. People might think it’s mad to walk out on a £50k a year job but it’s about your quality of life. I’m far happier now than I was before.”

Now Mark is self-employed as an electrician and solar installer for the Ideal Home Group.

“Once you have a trade you can take that anywhere, there are so many opportunities. I now look forward to going to work again.”

From The Kenyan Bush To...

Meet Michael Slabber ... 26 years old from London. Michael was a soldier in the Army and an Afghanistan veteran.

So what does a guy that only knows about being a soldier in the most inhospitable and dangerous parts of the planet do when he decides it’s time for a new career?

Police? Security? Personal trainer? Nope ... Michael wanted to run his own business and be in control of his future. He had completed everything that he wanted to in the Army so now was the time to change.

“I came across a company called New Career Skills, which retrains mature career changers, and signed up for the electrical course straight away.

It was hard-work trying to juggle my studies whilst I was based in Kenya ... most evenings I was out in the Kenyan bush with all my books, trying to fit in as much study time as I could.”

Michael is now a qualified Domestic Electrical Installer and has realised is dream of running his own business. He setup London Electrical Solutions with the help of New Career Skills (NCS) and a colleague, Stewart, who also retrained with NCS.

“We’re currently in the process of getting registered with NICEIC, the certification will be a huge development for the business as it will allow us to undertake and certify any work we do.”

Michael is also working at turning his company green by doing some extra training with NCS on solar panel installation. They are also looking to expand the company and employ more staff, potentially students that have trained with NCS.

"Although I do miss the Army and camaraderie of being around the guys, I know I've made the right career change financially and for my future."
